Rays game tonight has nice ring to it
Posted by admin in rings on 04 14th, 2009| | No Comments »

Fans attending tonight’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees at Tropicana Field will receive replica copies of the AL championship rings that Rays players will be presented that night.

The ring isn’t just something that comes out of a Cracker Jack box. It has the look and feel of the ring designed to celebrate the Rays’ American League pennant of a year ago. It weighs 8 ounces, with recessed and raised metal along with diamond dust on the face. The sides are inscribed with the Rays’ 97-65 record last season and their 9=8 motto.

The game is sold out, but tickets remain for Wednesday night’s series finale between the Rays and

For right-hander James Shields, helping the Rays raise their first championship banner Monday night was special.

But Shields had a feeling Tuesday’s pregame ring ceremony would top it.

“When we get our rings,” he said, “we’ll really understand what we did last year.”

In an emotional event, principal owner Stuart Sternberg handed out the American League championship rings to nearly 50 members of the organization before the 7-2 loss to the Yankees. Everyone from stars Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria to the head groundskeeper and training staff shook hands with Sternberg, executive VP Andrew Friedman and president Matt Silverman before posing for pictures and receiving an ovation from the sellout crowd.

The prize was shiny: 14-karat white gold rings with 48 diamonds.

“I’ll probably just keep looking at it,” said third-base coach Tom Foley, who has been with the Rays since 1995. “It’s special, something I’ll always treasure.”

The top of the ring features a raised outline of a baseball infield and “Rays” in blue letters with a specialty cut yellow diamond in an 18-karat gold starburst inlay. On one side, in raised polished letters, is “AL East Champs,” with the AL logo below it with a wraparound banner containing “1st Pennant.” Embedded on the other side are the recipient’s name, the “TB” logo and the Rays’ regular-season record of “97-65.”

Pitching coach Jim Hickey pointed out the rings appear designed to be worn; the Rays declined to give the cost, but they’re not over-the-top. “It’s not one of those tremendously big, uncomfortable, gaudy things where you really have no place you could wear it,” Hickey said.

Closer Troy Percival, who owns a 2002 Angels World Series ring, said he was “not so much happy for me, but ecstatic for the guys who have been enduring this for so long.”

Just ask Shields, who was drafted by the Rays in 2000.

“I’m gonna wear the (heck) out of it,” he said. “Maybe not every day, but I’m gonna wear it. Until that World Series ring can replace it, it’s going to have to do.”

Ranking the rings
Posted by admin in rings on 04 14th, 2009| | No Comments »

Rays Today, the Rays pass out some bling, giving their players rings for winning last season’s American League pennant, while fans attending will receive replicas of the rings. As you can see, the replicas look cool, but I’m guessing the diamonds aren’t real. Of course, the Rays won only the American League, so the rings can’t be quite as swanky as the ones passed out to the Phillies or those given to championship clubs in other sports. Today, I rank the most recent championship rings. (Note: the Steelers have not passed out their rings for this past Super Bowl.) Click on the rings for a larger photo.
Celtcis 1. Boston Celtics
This might be the coolest ring anyone has ever seen. A 14-karat white gold ring with 84 diamonds. The topper is the green shamrock made of genuine emerald. Little touches that are hard to notice but are there include a parquet background, which represents the floor the Celtics are known for, as well as the signature of Celtics builder Red Auerbach on the inside.
Redwings 2. Detroit Red Wings
Hey, for hockey, not half-bad. You have 170 round diamonds, two marquise diamonds, three pear-shaped diamonds and 11 custom-cut baguette diamonds. I wouldn’t know a baguette diamond from a bagel diamond, but shaping them into a Stanley Cup and paying homage to all 11 Cups the Wings have won leaves my jaw dropped. Plus, are there many better emblems in sports than that of the Red Wings?

Giants 3. New York Giants
Team star Michael Strahan said he wanted a “10-table ring,” meaning you could see it in a restaurant 10 tables away. Covered in diamonds, the rings feature three Super Bowl trophies representing the three New York has won. It has the “NY” logo and “World Champions” and the score against the Patriots and all. But it’s the NFL; it’s New York. I want more. I’d give it an “eight-table” rating.

Rays receive AL championship rings
Posted by admin in rings on 04 14th, 2009| | No Comments »

Twenty-three players, eight coaches, manager Joe Maddon and 14 members of the front-office staff received their American League Championship rings in a pregame ceremony at sold-out Tropicana Field on Tuesday night.

Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg, president Matt Silverman and executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman presented the rings.

Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Gerry Hunsicker was the first to receive his ring, and Carl Crawford, who is the longest-tenured Rays, was the last, receiving a warm embrace from Sternberg before taking possession of the wooden box holding his ring.

All fans in attendance received a replica ring as well.

The top of the 14k white gold ring features the Rays’ primary logo set against a diamond background. Atop the raised outline of a baseball infield is “Rays” in blue letters with a specialty cut yellow diamond in an 18k gold starburst inlay. The oval section panel contains 48 diamonds of various sizes.

On one side of the ring in raised polished letters are the words “AL East Champs,” and just below it is the American League logo with a wraparound banner containing the words “1st Pennant.” The recipient’s name, the “TB” logo and the Rays’ 2008 regular-season record “97-65″ are embedded on the other side of the ring.

The Rays produced 480 rings for players, staff, employees, and ownership. Rays full-time employees will receive their rings in a private ceremony tomorrow.
